Presence

Photography exploring what it means to remain fully human in an age of accelerating technology.
Mark L Edwards is a UK documentary and environmental portrait photographer based in Sawbridgeworth. His long-form photographic work explores identity, belonging and community at a time when rapid technological change is reshaping how people live, work and connect.
Alongside his photographic practice, Mark has more than three decades of experience in the global software and technology sector, where he continues to advise companies on strategy, growth and mergers and acquisitions. Working within that world has given him a close view of the speed and scale of technological change, and it informs his interest in how people and communities adapt in the digital age.
Working primarily in black and white, he develops long-form documentary projects built slowly over time. Through environmental portraiture and careful observation, his photographs explore the character of individuals within the places that shape their lives. The emphasis is on presence rather than spectacle, and on revealing the emotional depth carried quietly within ordinary lives.
His current project, It Takes A Town, is a community portrait series documenting the social fabric of contemporary Britain through the lives of people connected to one town. The work reflects a wider belief that in a rapidly changing technological world, the strength of human relationships and communities may matter more than ever.
Through portraiture, storytelling and reflection, his work invites the viewer to slow down, look more closely and rediscover the human presence that exists beneath modern noise.
